Battle of the Primers

Wednesday, 7 October 2015

Hello Everyone,

Searching through my makeup draw the other day, I came to realise that a few of my primers are actually running out (my Maybelline Baby Skin is in fact all gone now!) In all honesty, I have only recently got into using primers and before I only really had them when they were part of a larger set (I wouldn't really go out and buy a full sized primer or have one on my wish list). So, now all my little small primer bottles are running out I want to try and decide which I should go out and repurchase-hence why I'm doing a little review of each of the three I own today, with the hope of deciding which I like the most at the end!

The three primers in question are the Maybelline Baby Skin, Benefit Porefessional (Travel Sized) and Smashbox Photo Finish (also Travel Size)...

1. Smashbox Photo Finish-£25.50-I got this within the Smashbox Try it kit (which is £19.00) during the summer and I have only recently started using it. From what I have seen of it so far though, I am very happy with the quality of the primer and the way it leaves my skin looking and feeling.

It definitely holds my makeup in place all day, and leaves my skin smooth with little redness showing. Obviously it is a higher end product so for its price I would expect it to be a pretty decent primer (thankfully it is though, and it's definitely one I would keep in mind to repurchase in future).

2. Maybelline Baby Skin-£7.99-I bought this from Boots a while back after previously owning the anti-redness version, and for a few months it was my go-to primer. It has a pretty creamy consistency (not much like that of other primers I have tried) and doesn't really leave you with the smoothness to the skin that most primers do.

Saying that, it is a very reasonable price and does the job at the end of the day. I do like this primer but after using other higher end brands I don't think I would go back it in future.

3. Benefit Porefessional-£24.50-this also came as part of a set (I'm not too sure how much it cost but it was probably in the £20-£39 range as most Benefit sets are) that I received last Christmas, and before the receiving the set I didn't really think all that much of primers. But after using this product I actually realised how much of a difference primers make to base makeup, and my love of them was finally ignited.

A little of this product goes a long way-which explains why it has taken me so long to get through such a small bottle of the stuff. It makes my skin feel really smooth, and like the Smashbox primer it definitely helps to hold my makeup in place all day.

In conclusion, I think I would probably pick the Benefit Porefessional above the other primers to rebuy-it's definitely a close call though, as all three do the job and work in their different way. The Porefessional is just a little ahead of the rest though,in my opinion, due to it's longevity and how soft it leaves my skin feeling.

Which primers do you use, or which primers do you want to own?

Thank you for Reading,

Olivia xo

  1. I have only ever tried the Maybelline Baby Skin primer but I would love to try the Benefit one you have mentioned! I, like you, have never been overly bothered about primers but I think I need to get myself into the hype as I have seen them make a huge difference!

    Great post!

  3. I really want to try baby skin, because I put it on the back of my hand once and it made it so soft. I just use one from NYC, it's okay but you really have to let it sink it otherwise it just comes straight of again

    1. For the baby skins I like the light blue bottle better than the yellowy one that I have put in this blogpost, as like you said it makes your skin feel really smooth!

  9. I'm not a big fan of the Smashbox one, I mean, it is good, but I find it way too pricey as there's other cheaper ones that work exactly the same for me!

    1. I agree, it does cost a lot considering what it actually does! I have seen other primers that cost less but these are just the three I currently own!

  10. I haven't tried any of these but I have monistat that said to be the dupe of smashbox, but I don't think it pro long the wear of foundation, it just smooth out my skin and slightly blur the pores, and it doesn't have oil control. I really want to buy the benefit porefessional or hourglass mineral veil primer in travel size.

    1. That's a shame! I think Porefessional really helps with pro longing foundation wear in my experience but I don't think that is the case for everyone!
